Great Britain's Jonnie Peacock

CAMBRIDGE Paralympian Jonnie Peacock has triumphed in the 100m final this evening, setting a games record in the process.

Peacock, the T44 100m sprinter, took on big names South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius and Brazil’s Alan Oliveira in the Olympic Stadium.

Roared on by a huge crowd that chanted his name beforehand, Peacock won a thrilling race in a time of 10.90 seconds and left Games icon Pistorius trailing far behind.

The 19-year-old beat Richard Browne into second place.

Pistorious, who came fourth, said it had been the biggest night in Paralympic history and that Peacock had a “great future” ahead of him.

Peacock said it had been a “totally surreal” evening and paid tribute to everyone that had helped him get to the Games.

He said: “It’s absolutely unreal. I knew this was going to be intense. David Weir going just minutes before I went out, we’d had a great day so far.

“I didn’t think it was going to be wuite that crazy (in the stadium). I didn’t know what was going to get a bigger cheer - Oscar or me. I had to tell them all to be quiet!”

He also paid tribute to Dan Pfaff, who also trained former Olympic 100m champion Donovan Bailey, for making him into a “professional athlete”.
