Pragmatic Mick McCarthy looks to keep ‘buzzing’ players grounded

Bolton v Ipswich: You’ve not achieved anything yet.

That is the pragmatic view of Mick McCarthy as his side head to Bolton Wanderers tomorrow having moved out of the bottom three for the first time in more than 10 weeks.

The feel-good factor returned to Portman Road on Tuesday night when high-flying Nottingham Forest were beaten 3-1 in Town’s best performance of the season.

But McCarthy’s two other victories have both quickly been followed by away-day howlers with the Blues crashing back down to earth after heavy defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester City. Now the Town boss has sounded a warning ahead of the trip to the Reebok Stadium as Ipswich look to end their best week of the season so far with another decent showing.

McCarthy said: “The lads were buzzing on Tuesday night because they won and played well. But I have told them its not May 4 (when the season ends) yet.

“We have had a nice little run, but we have to keep it going and do the things that have got us the results.”

Having seen his side ship 11 goals in their last two away outings, McCarthy is well aware of ensuring his players don’t capitulate if they concede first against a Bolton side that are short on consistency but big on squad strength.

He added: “At home, we have seemed a little bit more solid and been a team. The organisation has been getting better and better.

“You get tougher by winning games, you get team spirit and a solidity. But we can’t give goals away like we did at Leicester and also Crystal Palace.

“When mistakes are made, it is about repairing the damage that someone else has done rather than compound it with another mistake.”

After one month in charge at Portman Road, McCarthy, who is sweating on the fitness of midfielder Luke Hyam for tomorrow’s match, has admitted he is pleased with a haul of 10 points from a possible 18.

He said: “The situation is looking healthier, but I have to be honest – the position in the league doesn’t bother me.”
