We’re approaching the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest days in the history of Ipswich Town Football Club - and now you can relive those glorious memories.
Were you at Wembley Stadium on May 6, 1978, to cheer Bobby Robson’s Super Blues to victory in the FA Cup final?
Amazingly, that great day is now almost 40 years ago. To mark the approaching anniversary, the EADT and Ipswich Star have produced a very special publication, which will bring those memories flooding back.
In Our Blue Heaven tells the story of Town’s FA Cup triumph, from the third round trip to Cardiff to that never-to-be forgotten afternoon in north London.
Using more than 200 fantastic photos from the EADT and Star’s unrivalled archive, In Our Blue Heaven chronicles every game of Ipswich’s cup run.
Of course, all Town supporters know the fairytale ending, with local lad Roger Osborne scoring the winning goal at Wembley, only a week after being controversially dropped for the last league game before the final!
But do you remember who Town played in the fourth round, or the very lucky draw against Bristol Rovers at a snowbound Eastville in the fifth round?
Then there was the thumping 6-1 win over Millwall at the Den, in a game marred by home fans attacking Ipswich supporters, and the players having to leave the pitch for their own safety.
In Our Blue Heaven recalls the memorable semi-final against West Brom at Highbury, a game in which Ipswich lad Brian Talbot suffered a serious facial injury in bravely scoring the first goal in Town’s 3-1 win.
The final section is, obviously, devoted to the big day at Wembley when Town dominated red-hot favourites Arsenal, hitting the woodwork three times before Osborne’s late winner past Gunners keeper Pat Jennings.
The publication features many brilliant photos of Town supporters before, during and after the big games in the cup run.
Particularly notable are the pictures of the thousands of fans gathered in Ipswich the day after the cup final, as the players and management toured the town on an open-topped bus. Some of the vantage points people found for a good view in and around the Cornhill really do have to be seen to be believed!
In Our Blue Heaven is a perfect Christmas gift for the Ipswich Town supporter in your family. Enjoy the memories!
