Ipswich Witches held their 2017 press day at Ipswich Sports Club this morning, with all the riders in attendance.

Despite the damp weather outside and the fact this afternoon’s practice session was cancelled, there was a positive and cheerful vibe among the riders gathered.

Many pundits have tipped the Witches for honours this season as they post a formidable top five.

However, most people in the sport know that trophies are won on the track, not on paper.

“We do have a strong-looking team I must admit,” director of speedway at Foxhall, Chris Louis admitted.

“In fact I did have to wonder how we have done it having two-and-a-half points less to play with.

“But it’s a long season and much to race for.”

The Witches entertain Sheffield at Foxhall Heath on Saturday night in the club’s opening Championship clash of the season.

The Tigers are another of the title favourites this season and Louis says his team could not have much of a tougher start.

“Sheffield do look good and it will be a tricky start for us,” Louis said.

“We have a slightly different-shaped track and although it won’t look that much different from the outside, it will ride differently.

“It could take us a few meetings to get used to it, but I think it will very much favour us as the season unfolds.”

Children go free at Foxhall on Saturday night and the team will be on track tomorrow afternoon - weather permitting.
