Smith’s departure was confirmed in the middle of January, but his departure was delayed until he received the visa required to begin his new life in the United States.

But he arrived in Colorado earlier this week, with his new club welcoming him on social media with the message ‘welcome home’. That sparked a flurry of messages from Ipswich fans, though, who were quick to point out that Portman Road will always be home to a man who made 267 during his stay in Suffolk.

Smith has trained with his new team-mates for the first time and is looking forward to getting started in the MLS.

“It’s great to be out here after all this time,” he said.

“It’s been three weeks since I actually signed so it’s great to be out here, meet the lads and get through the first session.

“Maybe that will be a little blessing in disguise, having a little three week break from the pitch, because it’s obviously going to be a long season for me having started last June. A little break won’t do me any harm.

“The goal at the start of the season is to make the play-offs and the ambition here was a big reason in me coming here.”
