IPSWICH Town defender Tommy Smith has described being selected for the London Olympics with New Zealand as a “fantastic honour”.

The 23-year-old has been named in the ‘Lily Whites’ 23-man squad for the Games where he will come up against Belarus, Egypt and Brazil.

Smith said: “It’s a fantastic honour to be selected for the Olympics and it will be a great experience too.

“I’m just really excited to be involved in the Olympics, especially with them being held in England.”

And the young defender has moved to reassure concerned Town fans that his hectic summer – which include the Oceania Nations Cup and pre-Olympic friendlies in Asia – will not impact on his club form next season.

He added: “I will be back for the start of pre-season with Ipswich for a while, before then joining up with the All Whites.

“Playing in the Games would add to my match fitness ahead of the season, as well as being a fantastic honour, so I think I will be fine for Ipswich come the start of the season.”

  • what a stupid thing to say jungle boy. being an olympian is not something to get excited about?? one of the most ridiculous comments I have read on this site and thats saying something. Well done Tommy for the selection although it would have been a shock if not picked as they don't have a whole lot of options. I think Beckham should be included in the team. None of our under 23's have his ability to passcross the ball as he does. I for one like most are looking forward to the upcoming tournament. Come on Team GB.

  • Football in the olympics is not really something to get excited about, and is not really significant. If you say it is an honour Tommy, nobody can argue with you, however, this is your opinion. You can tell this is minor league stuff, when David Beckham gets an invite, a man who has served his country with honour, but now playing football which is non mainstream, Beckham has been picked because of ceremonial reasons, football is a cruel sport, if this competition was serious, he would never get picked. However the football in the olympics should only be open to amateurs, as it used to be.
