The centre-back was Paul Jewell’s top target in the January transfer window but a bid for the player – believed to be the fourth made by Town – was turned down last night.

While Pompey accepted an offer from Ipswich for Joel Ward and Stephen Henderson, those moves breaking down over personal terms, it seems Pearce was the one player the South Coast club was desperate to hang on to.

And it seems the feeling was mutual with Pearce telling the Portsmouth News: “I didn’t want to go but I thought I may be forced out because of the club’s problems. Luckily, though, the club wanted to keep me.

“I have to admit, I thought there could have been a chance I could have been going. My head has been all over the place over the past couple of days.

“All I have heard is they rejected bids from three or four different clubs. Ipswich were one of them. There were other clubs, but it doesn’t matter who they are.

“I didn’t want to leave. The manager made it very clear he didn’t want to let me go and I was keen to stay. I knew it might not have come down to my decision with the club needing funds. Thankfully, I’m still here, though, which is just what I wanted.”

Despite basking in the 5-1 victory over table-topping West Ham, Town boss Paul Jewell is still expected to enter the loan market for another defender when it opens next week.

  • Well all I can say is I'm glad you decided to stay at Portsmouth because we only want players who want to play for Town and be proud to wear the shirt. Too many players have come to Ipswich for the money and that is what the problem is for the Town. The youngsters have shown passion and proud to wear the shirt I only hope Jewell has noticed this and continue to play them. All that is need now is Carson to be picked and played so come on Jewell wake up before you lose another talented player.

  • Loved last night, we showed passion and commitment, best we have played all season. One problem I can't place is why we can't play like that week in week out???????????? Also why sign a player who clearly does not want to be here, lucky escape I say! Let's get players in who want to play for the club like matey from Hearts!!!!!!!!! Lets stay up and strengthen this summer with young blood.

  • Rob, if you bothered to look into the facts, it's clear that Portsmouth's players have had their wages deferred for a few days only, whilst an application is made to the court to lift the freezing order on their bank account. Such things are standard practice when a company is going through administration. That position is entirely consistent with the above article. Why do you always take the deconstructive, negative view in every situation? Do you not have any joy or positivity in life?

  • Pearce might as well go down with his beloved Portsmouth. No good him coming to a club that he clearly does not see any future in. The lads played well last night but I still think we need another good defender to shore up the back.

  • Perhaps PJ's no good at nappy changing, if you'd rather stay with a club that's already down the swanee, to me it shows total lack of ambition. Yes, I hear you say, it is admirable to stay with a sinking ship, when ours hasn't quite hit the iceberg yet, but if you don't get paid you too will be up the creek without the proverbial. I know the position or circumstances with Pompey are not quite the same as Town's when they went into administration, but I seem to recall we were made to accept any reasonable offer for our players and in our case reasonable wasn't really the case.

  • Yesterday you run a 'story' saying Portsmouth players have not been paid. Today you run a 'story' claiming that Town cannot match those wages - ie nothing. This is surely worrying news for the Town players who played so well last night despite knowing Jewell doesnt want them

  • Good choice that man, you would not want to play for a team, who's management and fans think success is staying in the championship for another season.

  • Nice to hear of a loyal player considering that Portsmouth are in trouble money wise. Shame we didn't get him . We still need one or two at the back if we wish to push on. and still upset that Clue-less Clegg Failed us AGAIN..
