TRANSFER NEWS: Kelly Youga signs for Ipswich Town

Kelly Youga has signed for Town until January

Archant

MICK McCarthy has made his first signing as Ipswich Town manager – bringing in former Charlton defender Kelly Youga on a short-term deal.

The 27-year-old trained with Blues for the first time yesterday and has been added to the squad for tonight’s Suffolk Premier Cup tie at Walsham Le Willows.

Kelly started his career at Lyon, where he trained alongside Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda. In the summer of 2005, he joined Charlton and went on to make 71 appearances for the club in his six years at The Valley.

He made his debut in the Football League while on loan at Bristol City in 2005, playing five times for the Robins. Further loan spells followed at Bradford, in 2007 – where he made 11 appearances – and Scunthorpe, for six months during their Championship campaign in 2007/08, making 20 appearances.

Knee injuries hindered his progress at Charlton after he had established himself in the Addicks’ line-up and he left the club in May 2011. He joined Yeovil in January of this year on a short-term contract but left Huish Park by mutual consent two months later.

In the summer he made his international debut, playing for the Central African Republic in a 2-0 win over Botswana.

  • Nice to see McCarthy venturing into the market, but I have read more impressive CV's before. now we shall see what new signings and therefore our new managers judgement looks like.

  • I was one of those town fans who was not in favour of MM taking the hot seat at PR. Having said that, he has had a good start with 6 points from 9. We have to get behind him and trust in his judgement for now. The time to judge is at the end of the season, lets hope he has steered us to a top half finish. He needs cover in defence and he has obviously seen something in Youga that he likes. At this time of year MM is limited to out of contract or loan players. Hopefully in January he will start to build a better team. So stop moaning and start supporting.

  • Guess his CV is in line with the level of wages SC is prepared to allow.

  • A sensible signing on a short term deal. we need more cover at the back. if he impresses he earns a longer deal if he doesn't we aren't stuck with him and can attempt to land someone better in January so not really a massive gamble, just a prolonged trial in which he is allowed to play in the first team.

  • My initial reaction was hardly elation. Hopefully Mick M knows more than we do and there is more to this guy than meets the eye!

  • See he played a couple of games for Yeovil. That'll be handy to give the bus driver directions to the ground next season!!
