US players set to descend on Thorpeness Rugby Club

13:29 26 October 2012

Players from across the Atlantic will descend on Thorpeness tomorrow for a very special game against Ipswich YM (2.30pm).

A reunion game is being hosted by the club and will feature several players who starred for the original club and then Sizewell, between 1973 and 1995.

Among those players are Dave Martinez, Bill Perkins and Vince Lemus, who were all based at Bentwaters Air base and decided to get to grips with rugby union.

Martinez still lives in Suffolk but for Perkins and Lemus, it will be a flying visit – the duo spending barely a week in England before returning to the US.

“The club will be open from midday, we will have an Olympic torch on display and we are hoping to see some big numbers with the Thorpeness vets team and the YM Old Boys turning up,” said club chairman Dale Hoffman.

“There will be old faces turning up from all over the place while there are about a dozen people at the new Thorpeness club, which started again in March 2010, that were part of the original club, including current president, Jim Robinson.”

The club is finding its feet again following its reformation almost three years ago and is hoping to move into Eastern Counties 2 next season.

Hoffman explains why the original set-up ceased.

“It just fell away,” said Hoffman, another original member of the club.

“Numbers peaked with the construction of Sizewell B and people from there were joining and the club was thriving.

“We have started again and are not over-stretching things.

“We only have the one team at the moment but that ensures we always have a team that we can put out every week.

“If Sizewell C is built, hopefully we will see an increase in players from those working on the construction of the building and we have to be ready for it this time.”
