The tough-tackling girls play in National Challenge LeagUe SE1 and are just two steps away from Premiership rugby.

They train on Wednesday evenings and, as I encountered during a training session last year for a feature I penned, they are a very friendly bunch – albeit a friendly bunch that are incredibly uncompromising in the tackle.

The team are looking for players of all abilities, to play in any position, although the front-row is slightly depleted at the moment.

Amazons player, Sarah Thomas, said: “I would encourage anyone to come along and give rugby a go.

“We are a friendly, fun club and are part of a bigger set-up with the other teams at the club.”

Watching Ipswich Town finish their home campaign with a 3-2 win over MK Dons on Saturday was akin to the feeling a high handicap golfer gets playing a couple of decent shots down the 18th hole of a mixed round.
