Charlotte Smith-Jarvis says Greg Davies, live in Ipswich as part of the You Magnificent Beast tour, is one of the funniest stand-ups she’s seen.

Oh Greg Davies – you Yeti-sized ‘magnificent beast’. What did you do to us last night at the Ipswich Regent?

I swear one of my friends almost had an asthma attack, he was laughing so much, snorting frantically through a glass of cider.

But let’s start at the beginning. Warm-up acts can be, well, rubbish, but belly-flashing, self-deprecating, Dolly Parton-singing, caterpillar-dancing Barry Castagnola had the audience in stitches. From having too much of a good time at a Lionel Richie concert, to recalling the horrors of going on ‘hollibobs’ with a girlfriend, there were no flat moments in the routine.

But nothing could have prepared us for what was to follow. A seamless, rib-aching traipse through the life and loves of Inbetweeners, Man Down and Taskmaster star Greg.

Opening to R Kelly against a backdrop of the actor-comedian frolicking semi-naked in a field, the tone was set. This was going to be dirty. Real dirty.

So there was the time his mum casually dropped the idea of buying a sex aid into conversation over a succulent steak dinner. TMI mum!

Not an eye was dry as Greg told of the fate of poor Blue Ted (who would probably need counselling if teddies could talk).

And then we were flung into Greg’s list of the pitfalls of middle age – from buying folk music and growing talons, to accidentally exposing his nether regions to a pensioner.

One of Greg’s great talents is as a storyteller. Some of his tales (the blind date from hell with a hammer thrower) are long-winded, but with his animation, cheeky asides and masterful pacing, he pulled them off in a way only a pro could.

I can’t tell you what happened in the final act (which involved a choir) because it’s too darn good to ruin. So you’ll just have to see for yourselves.

What a rip-roaring, rollercoaster of a ride. I for one can’t wait for his next tour, so get writing Greg!

Most of the dates for the You Magnificent Beast tour (concluding at the end of January 2018) have sold out, but you can still get your hands on seats at Cambridge Corn Exchange on January 16.
