An Ipswich road is set to remain closed until the new year after a water main burst.

Westerfield Road has been shut for a number of days after the incident, which caused an interruption to people's supply.

Despite repairs being completed, the road is likely to remain closed until 2024 due to Anglian Water being unable to get supplies this close to Christmas.

A statement on the water company's website said: "We're pleased to say the repairs to the water pipes in your area have now been completed and your water supply is now completely back to normal.

"What we're not able to do yet is reopen the road as we'd hoped. The bursts caused substantial damage to the road surface, pavements and kerbs and due to the amount of materials we need this close to Christmas, it's going to take us longer than we wanted to get things back to how they were."

Anglian Water added it is "likely" works won't be completed until 2024, with a provisional date set for January 5.

A spokesman added: "We know it’s a busy time of year, so thank you for your patience during this time and once again we apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
