A man has been charged after a serious assault in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to Dogs Head Street, in Ipswich, at 4.13am after a man in his 30s suffered a suspected serious head injury outside The Plough pub. 

He was taken to Ipswich Hospital for treatment, with Suffolk Police describing his condition as critical, although he has since been discharged.

Shortly after the incident, at 4.20am, officers arrested a man nearby.

Paul Andrews, of Austin Street, Ipswich, was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre, and has now been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

The 35-year-old has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Monday, March 11.

Suffolk Police have appealed for anyone who was in the vicinity of Dogs Head Street between 3.45am and 4.45am on Saturday morning to contact Ipswich CID on 101, quoting reference 37/13250/24.
