Suffolk police received reports of a single vehicle collision in Bramford Road, near to the junction with Chevalier Street, at around 8.25am.

A police spokesman said it appeared that a Vauxhall Signum car had collided with a pedestrian crossing post, which had been “taken out”.

The road was closed for more than an hour, causing delays for many drivers heading into Ipswich, before it reopened at around 9.45am.

Police placed cones around the area where the traffic light post had been knocked over and highways teams were called to clear an oil spill.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.

There were no reports of any serious injuries, although the East of England Ambulance Service Trust attended as a precaution.
