Three sisters are doing it for themselves

A long established Ipswich wedding cake makers has new owners and has moved to a new home in Tacket Street.

The Ipswich custom cake makers, established in 1985, has had several owners.

Now the Wood family have taken it over and Chris and Amanda Wood have fitted out the shop unit for its new use.

Mum Amanda said: “We wanted to do something together as a family. We sat down and the girls said they wanted to go for it.

Amanda and Chris Wood have five daughters, Penny, Vicky, Abbie, Sophie and Chloe.

Sisters Vicky Vincent,25, and Sophie Wood,19, are running the new shop on a daily basis with the help of their younger sister Chloe, who is still studying at Claydon High School, on Saturdays.

They make individually designed and crafted cakes for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions.

Vicky, who trained and worked for eight years at the previous shop, said: “The whole family is very artistic.

“Mum is going to come in on Mondays and help with the baking.

“She has made our work dresses too.

“Dad Chris was heavily involved in the design and the fitting out of the shop. He is very creative. My husband is an electrician, and did the electrics. So it is a real family affair.

“Mum and dad have left it to us to run the new shop. It is very exciting.”

Sophie who trained in art and design at Suffolk New College added: “We only opened the doors on Saturday and a lot of people found us and came in.

“We have made a lot of different, unusual designs over the years. We once made a pirate island, with pirates, waves and wrecks in the sea.”

Popular characters like Winnie the Pooh, Bob the Builder and Sleeping Beauty, and Iggle Pigglefrom In The Night Garden often feature on children’s birthday cakes.Vicky even made her own wedding cake..

“It had to be good, because so many wanted to see it. It was four tier in ivory and light chocolate, with small cakes as favours for family and close friends. And we had a cup cake tower.”

The sisters said they sometimes had unusual requests for designs for birthdays and other special occasions cakes.

Vicky said Tacket Street was a good location with so many complementary businesses with a wedding theme nearby; wedding dresses, flowers, fashion and beauty salons.
