In 1986 Ipswich docks was closed off to the public, trucks were moved in and big cameras were set up with props and cars all in place for a day of filming.

Two helicopters were flown in to make an entrance, travelling past the Orwell Bridge and other Suffolk landmarks - and it was all to set the scene for 1987 film The Fourth Protocol.

The spectacle saw lead actor Michael Caine come to the town to shoot on the scenic Ipswich Docks for the Cold War spy production.

In the film, Caine played an MI5 officer called John Preston and worked opposite Pierce Brosnan, who starred in the role of KGB officer Valeri Petrofsky.

Brosnan’s absence in these photographs suggest that he didn’t visit Ipswich for filming, but there are plenty of the action unfolding.
