The funeral of former Suffolk tennis legend and Wimbledon referee, Peter Mornard, has taken place.

Peter was 70 when he died after a long battle with stomach cancer in November.

Peter’s brother-in-law Larry Fulcher said that over 200 people attended the funeral which was held at St Margaret’s Church in Ipswich last week.

“We were surprised at how many people came and they came from quite a long distance,” said Mr Fulcher.

Peter was a stalwart of the Suffolk Lawn Tennis Association with whom he was a member for 43 years.

His expertise in the game led him to be an assistant referee at Wimbledon on many occassions.

For many years he was a tennis correspondent for the East Anglian Daily Times and the Ipswich Star.

As well as tennis Peter was a regular in productions by local drama group the Bucklesham Players, where he played roles such as Captain Hook.
