Work to pedestrianise Queen Street in the heart of Ipswich and create a new alternative venue for Ipswich market is over-running and has not been completed in time for Easter as planned.
The barriers are being amended to allow pedestrians to use the newly-paved street but it will not be open for deliveries or market stalls until the final work is completed later in the spring.
Suffolk County Council does not yet have a date for the work to be completed.
The remodelling of Queen Street and the creation of a new “pedestrian priority” junction with Falcon Street and St Nicholas Street is a key element of the proposals to regenerate the town centre.
It should help to create a new pedestrian-friendly route from the town centre, through “The Saints” to the Waterfront – and provide a new site for the market which can be used while the Cornhill is being rebuilt next year and as an overspill for further market stalls in the years ahead.
