When the weather is as glorious as this, you want to do nothing more than sit back and relax.

Now, what if you could do that whilst sitting in a soothing outdoor pool, looking out over the perfectly manicured grounds of The Berystede Hotel & Spa, near Ascot?

The al fresco facilities at the Macdonald hotel are quite simply divine. The soothing bubble jets ease your achy muscles while the more powerful version targets those knotted shoulders.

Lounge chairs surround the pool, which is set in a secluded corner of the hotel grounds to afford guests some privacy.

You can probably tell, we spent a large part of our stay floating around in the al fresco pool, shutting out the real world for a few blissful hours.

The spa is located on the lower levels of the hotel, which is set in tiered grounds close to Ascot Racecourse. The four star hotel is a harmonious blend of old and new, with the front of the building traditionally decorated to compliment the wooden features of the building.

The rooms are light and airy, neutrally decorated with a slightly corporate feel while the restaurant is the epitome of modern dining, with grey paint tones complimented with a rich amethyst, glossy tiling and luxury fabrics combining to create an upmarket feel.

At this point, it seems right to draw upon the food selection, which was slightly lacking in variety.

The evening meal was a set menu, with a meat, vegetable or fish option for starters, and just one additional meat option for the main course.

The meal was very reasonable at under £25 for three courses but there were supplements for several dishes.

The food, however, did not disappoint. The quails eggs gently oozed over the asparagus, which was wrapped in parma ham, a delicious starter option. And the meat option chosen by my guest for her main was tender and smelt flavour some.

Dessert was heavenly, I can recommend the coffee panna cotta option which is served with chocolate soil, ice cream and syrup - just don’t delve straight into the chocolate soil, it is extremely rich and much better enjoyed with the panna cotta.

Down in the spa area there is a very contemporary feel. Too hot for a sauna, we opted for some of the less intense experiences including the warming tiled spa beds which encourage your muscles to stretch and relax, the holistic salt room and the steam room with its fresh eucalyptus to help clear your head.

No surprises that there were also various options for cooling off - an ice room for the bravest of souls, and a selection of shower options from mist to rainforest, and of course, the indoor or outdoor pool.

The treatment area is the jewel in the crown of this luxury complex, soft lighting and dark wood give an exotic feel. They have catered for all senses with calming fragrances pumped around the room, soft chairs and cosy blankets to help you drift away. I was treated to a hot stone massage, and the therapist dug deep into my tense body to eases away tightness caused by hours hunched over my laptop - something many have attempted but never achieved.

And I would return for this alone.

The brow treatment I chose seemed slightly less refined and although the result was sufficient, it failed to have the impact of the massage - possibly because this is more of an every day beauty option and less indulgent.

Lunch is served in a sequestered area of the bar, allowing guests to dine in their robes without feeling self conscious.

The bento boxes are a superb treat, negating the need to decide by offering a light selection of salads, pastas, olives, vegetables and a naughty slice of cake plus a glass of Prosecco, all served speedily so you can return to the important task of....doing nothing.

Our overnight mini-break may have lasted little more than 24 hours, but it was like a super concentrated holiday.

Fine food, rich desserts, lazy breakfasts, relaxation, pampering and the chance to rekindle an often neglected friendship helped me feel rejuvenated plus the mobile phone ban forced me to fully shut off.

My only tip - avoid the main pool between 4pm and 6pm when some members pop in for a swim with their youngsters - hide away in the spa area, pop outside to the adult-only area or book a treatment.

Make the most of the summer offers at the Berystede Hotel & Spa, and stay overnight for £139 for two, including breakfast, Spa treatments vary in price with an hours treatment costing from £70.
