A SECOND person has died following an horrific accident between a car and two lorries on the A14.

Investigators are piecing together details of the smash on the A14 at Trimley St Mary which claimed the lives of two relatives – a woman, in her 50s, and a teenage boy – and left a third family member fighting for his life.

It is believed the woman and teenager were grandmother and grandson.

The man in his 60s who was injured is believed to be the woman’s husband. He is still critically ill and was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by the air ambulance last night.

Police said the boy, who was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, died in the early hours of this morning from his injuries.

A 50-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has today been released on bail.

The driver, from Dovercourt, was arrested at the scene of the crash near the Trimley villages sliproad.

A police spokesman said today that the man had been taken to the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later had been relesased on bail pending further inquiries. He will return to police again on October 16.

The accident – involving two 38-ton articulated lorries bound for the Port of Felixstowe, and a Fiat Punto – was one of three incidents on the Felixstowe peninsula yesterday afternoon, causing traffic chaos. The A14 was closed in both directions and diversions set up, with drivers travelling through part of Kirton, the Trimley villages and Walton.

Tailbacks initially started just after 1pm after police received reports of a broken down lorry at the dock spur roundabout.

Motorists reported oil all over the road and police were called to direct traffic.

Then at 1.50pm the fatal collision involving the car and lorries happened on the Felixstowe-bound carriageway at the sliproad at the Trimley interchange.

Emergency services, including three rapid response cars, two ambulances, fire crews, police and an air ambulance were called to the scene. Police closed both the A14 eastbound and westbound carriageways, directing traffic off via the sliproad, while the yellow East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopter landed on the dual carriageway.

A police spokeswoman said the woman in the car sadly died in the collision, while the male passenger in his 60s was taken to Ipswich Hospital, and the boy in his teens was flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridgeshire. Both had suffered life threatening injuries.

The three casualties were not from Suffolk, but last night police were unable to give any further details until next of kin had been informed.

In a third incident on the eastbound A14 in just under 90 minutes, a lorry driver was taken to hospital after his vehicle collided with another truck near the Bucklesham turn-off.

An ambulance and rapid response car from Ipswich attended the incident at 2.30pm.

Clinical operations manager Damon Wheddon, who attended the scene, said: “The man who we believe to be in his 30s sustained a neck injury and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation at the roadside, he was taken to Ipswich Hospital for further care.”

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to call the serious collision investigation team on 101.
