Newmarket trainer William Haggas will know whether or not Rivet is a contender for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas after his horse runs in today’s bet365 Craven Stakes.

The colt won the Champagne Stakes and Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster as a two-year-old, but also disappointed in the Dewhurst Stakes.

“I’m hoping he’ll run a good race. Jockey Andrea Atzeni wasn’t happy with the track when he ran in the Dewhurst, but I think seven furlongs on quick ground wasn’t his ideal conditions.

“I think he should be fine, but if he gets stuffed, he won’t be running in the Guineas.”

Aidan O’Brien, who has never won the Craven, saddles War Decree in the seven-runner field, the colt not seen in action since winning the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last summer.

Earlier, at 3pm, another field of seven contests the Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes in which Brando is favourite for trainer Kevin Ryan.

The gelding was fifth behind The Tin Man in the British Championships Sprint Stakes at Ascot after previously winning the Ayr Gold Cup and looks to have most to fear from Moore on Robert Cowell’s Ornate.

Ornate has his first run for the Six Mile Bottom-based trainer having previously been with Haggas.

Ed Walker’s Aeolus is another with a squeak after being pipped by a nose by Growl in the Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster.

Later in the day Manaahil has a good chance to go one better than her Kempton second in the 4.10pm maiden fillies’ stakes while at 4.45pm Martyn Meade’s Calibration under David Probert, aims to end a run of three consecutive runner-up finishes in the 10-furlong maiden.

Two runners in the 5.20pm finale bid for a hat-trick of wins. Tricorn for John Gosden has won at Newcastle and Wolverhampton while William Buick and Charlie Appleby’s Mystique Moon has done the same this year.

Earlier, in the 1.50pm opener, Roger Varian has Silvestre de Sousa in the plate on Doncaster winner Victory Angel while Ryan Moore should win the 2.25pm handicap on David O’Meara’s Salateen.
