No-one likes the sun more than me, writes Ipswich Witches number one Danny King in his latest column.

A nice barbecue in the garden, shades on, in my shorts, paddling in the pool. I love it.

But riding speedway when it is about 100 degrees... now that’s a different matter.

And that was about how hot it felt at Peterborough on Sunday. It was a scorcher but I’m no huge lover of racing in those temperatures.

Admittedly it’s great for fans and there were certainly plenty at the East of England Showground, including loads of Ipswich supporters.

We really are lucky to have such great support.

Some clubs have little travelling support, but we always do and, at local derbies like Peterborough, the riders notice it.

So, just a shame we couldn’t grab the win.We had no luck. And I mean NO luck.Cameron Heeps’ fuel line split after the start of heat three, so when it was re-run and the riders went back to the pits, it was noticed, but the mechanics couldn’t get it fixed in time, so he was excluded.

Kyle Newman packed up at the start of heat eight and Rory Schlein fell when trying to pass Bradley Wilson-Dean.

It wasn’t our day. But despite all that going wrong for us, we still picked up a point, although I can assure you as a team we were disappointed with that.

I started off well, but then as the visiting No.1, after two rides, you have about a six-race break and an interval before your third ride.

It’s almost like starting all over again.

The track invariably changes and whereas at Glasgow I got better as the meeting wore on, at Peterborough I got worse!

Peterborough is a very fair race track but still has a huge home advantage - and you need to be fast, or their riders come at you from all angles.

Jack Holder was their star man and I couldn’t beat him.

He will go a long way in the sport, maybe even as far as his brother, Chris.

It’s been a couple of decent points on the road for us in recent weeks, but we know we need a few wins too.

It’s proving a tough Championship, with Ben Barker’s Redcar Bears now in the mix after they had another big away win at the weekend.

Only four play-off places remember.

But enough about the Peterborough meeting, what about Great Britain’s win at King’s Lynn in the World Cup?

The boys are straight through to the final and yes, I do still very much wish I was with them.

I was actually at a wedding in Rotherham on Saturday, one of Clara’s friends, so I didn’t see the Lynn meeting, but it sounded good and sounded as though the British boys were on it throughout.

The final is this Saturday in Poland and I think it is fair to say it will be a different kettle of fish for our boys.

But good luck to them and here’s hoping.

With no meeting for the Witches last Thursday, I was asked to guest for Wolverhampton at Swindon.

It was a right mixed bag for me on a track I don’t especially like. In fact there are two tracks I don’t really like, Swindon and Lakeside. I feel I have cracked Lakeside now, but Swindon... I still have some work to do.

I didn’t do that great and Wolves lost by a point which was very disappointing.

Guesting for another club is never easy, but I always try to treat it as I would any meeting for my own club. For a start you have responsibilities to the team’s management and fans, as well as your own professional pride.

So, a paid five points was not great.

Three big meetings in four days now for the Witches.

Wow! This is a crucial period. There are potentially 11 points on offer for us, as we entertain Scunthorpe at Foxhall on Thursday, then travel to Berwick on Saturday and Newcastle on Sunday. We have to target three wins.

Last time we were at Berwick we won, despite being without Nico Covatti. At Newcastle we lost heavily, but had no Nico and lost Josh Bates after one race with injury. So, we are capable of winning both matches with a full team.

We are staying up near Berwick on Saturday night, Chris Louis is organising that. It will either be a happy night... Or long night... Depending on the result.

So, see you at Foxhall on Thursday.

We love having your support.
