Ipswich Witches director of speedway, Chris Louis, admits to being happy with his side’s progress and wants them to go on and achieve their potential.

The Suffolk side moved up to second in the Championship table on Sunday after a narrow 46-44 victory at Scunthorpe Scorpions saw them pick up three more league points.

Away victories in speedway are invariably difficult to come by, but that’s back-to-back wins now for Louis’ side. He couldn’t be more delighted, and wants more.

“We’ve had a difficult start to the campaign, everyone knows that,” Louis said, referring to the injuries to Kyle Newman, Nico Covatti and Danyon Hume.

“But we have come through that and we are definitely as good a team now as the one we put together at the start of the season.

“I’m happy with the progress we have made and despite everything we have kept scoring points away from home as well as at home.

“But of course you need a bit of luck and we need to stay clear of injuries.

“We’ve made the absolute best of the riders that were available to us after the injuries we had and I’m happy with where we are right now.”

The Witches have no meeting on Thursday and travel to Workington on Saturday before entertaining Newcastle at Foxhall on Thursday week, followed by league leaders Edinburgh at home the week after.

“We have some tough fixtures coming up,” Louis said.

“Then again I can’t actually think of any fixture that is easy in this league.

“We seemed to have created a very competitive Championship this season, which is good.

“Our aim is to get into the play-offs first. Then we will take it from there.

“We are still in the knock-out cup too – in the next round it looks like Sheffield – so if that proves to be the case, that won’t be easy.”

Louis admitted he was pleased for young Aussie, Cameron Heeps, to at last find a doubling-up role – with Somerset Rebels in the Premiership.

“Cameron needs to ride more regularly and this will do him a power of good,” Louis said.

“He was suffering a bit at Scunthorpe after a crash at Rye House the night before.

“He has a bit of a leg injury, nothing serious.

“He’s battered and bruised and having a bit of treatment.”
