More than 100 fish have been saved from one of the best-known ponds in Ipswich after it fell victim to the continuing heatwave.
Chantry Park’s ornamental pond started overheating and silting up in the high temperatures – prompting the borough council to call in specialists.
They have moved the fish to another water course where they should be able to stay in the swim throughout the heatwave.
A spokesman said: “The extreme heat has not only brought lower levels of water but the lack of sustained rainfall has led to a dramatic fall in water quality as the pond has silted up.
“We feared that many of the fish could die very quickly so we asked Framlingham Fisheries to move them to a safer environment.”
Now the operation is complete, parks staff will begin the task of de-silting the ornamental pond and restoring it so more fish can eventually be re-introduced.
