Ipswich Crown Court heard that 27 of the images were classified at the most serious, level five and 37 of the films were described as being level four.

The 75-year-old, who was a witness in a child abuse case surrounding an Irish school, told police he was investigating paedophiles on his computer on their behalf and intended to pass information on.

O'Brien, of Newcombe Court, Lowestoft pleaded guilty to 16 sample offences of making indecent photographs of a child and to one charge of possessing such images.

He sentenced O'Brien to six months in prison, suspended for two years. He was placed on two years probation supervision with a sex offender's prevention order, told to sign the sex offenders register for seven years and banned from working with children.
