A-Level joy – but stakes have never been higher

SCREAMS of joy were beginning to echo across Suffolk today as thousands of A-Level students ended their agonising wait for their results.

As teenagers opened their envelopes this morning, experts predicted the number of exams graded at least an A could increase to a record 27 per cent.

Scores of entries are also expected to given the illustrious A* mark – brought in for the first time this year to help universities choose the top pupils.

But the competition for places in higher education is extremely intense. Around 200,000 people are unlikely to get a place, including the some of the very best performers.

The stakes today have never been higher.

n Send in your A-Level stories. Did you get into the university of your choice? Should their be more university places in offer? What do you think of the new A* grade?
