A WOMAN driver who suffered serious injuries after a head-on crash on the A12 near Saxmundham on Saturday has been named.

Caroline Hellyer, of East Dulwich, London, was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital in a critical condition following the two-car accident, which happened south of Saxmundham at around 11.45am.

She was being treated at the hospital's intensive care unit yesterday for serious multiple injuries.

Her husband, Simon, and two children were admitted to hospital for observation. Mr Hellyer suffered seatbelt and head injuries, but they were not serious, and their two children were bruised, but not seriously.

They were travelling in a red P registration Peugeot 405LX estate.

The couple travelling in the other car involved, a T registration green Ford Focus, were taken to Ipswich hospital.

Robert and Julie Shaw, of Ayrshire, suffered minor injuries and were later discharged.

The road was closed for more than four hours, causing tailbacks, and police diversions were in place.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident. Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 252 Hamish Phelp of Halesworth traffic unit on 01473 613500.
