ANOTHER affordable housing scheme is to be built in a Suffolk village to help local people priced out of the property market.

Five houses were recently completed in Stoney Road, Grundisburgh, near Woodbridge, and now a development of seven homes is to be built on nearby Ablitts Meadow.

Grundisburgh and Culpho Parish Council has taken the proactive approach to providing homes for people who cannot afford to live in the village where they were born.

New homes cost more than £100,000 and are too expensive for young couples.

The parish teamed up with the Rural Housing Trust, English Rural Housing Association and the district council for the first development and this will be officially opened by Alun Michael, Minister for Rural Affairs, on June 12.

The second phase will have two and three-bedroom houses and two-bedroom bungalows. Applicants will have to give evidence of strong local connections with Grundisburgh to qualify.

The parish council – which complained to Suffolk Coastal District Council two years ago at the trend of expanding modest two or three-bedroom homes into executive properties – is keen to ensure that local people will move into the homes.

The name of the new development has historical links with the village. The Ablitt family were very early farm contractors who used to live in The Street, Grundisburgh. Two sons died in the First World War and are commemorated on the village war memorial.

George Ablitt died on October 12, 1916, aged 32, and his brother Frederick died seven months later aged 20.

John Ager, parish clerk said: ''The development commemorates an old village family, a long forgotten field name and two brothers who lost their lives in the service of their country.''

He appealed for anyone with more information about the Ablitt family to contact him on 01473 735541. Applications for a housing place should be made to The Rural Housing Trust on 01371 874738.
