A MAN accused of deliberately starting a fire at an Ipswich home has been remanded in custody.

Kenneth Parry, 39, is charged with arson and endangering life following a blaze at a mid-terrace house in Surrey Road, Ipswich.

At a hearing at magistrates court in Ipswich yesterday > Parry was charged with the offence. He did not enter a plea.

Magistrates immediately sent the case to Ipswich Crown Court due to the seriousness of the alleged offence.

Ian Persaud, for Parry, made an application for bail, but this was refused by magistrates. The defendant will appear at the crown court on October 23.

David Taylor, prosecuting, outlined details of the case to the court. He said fire had broken out at the Surrey Road home on Friday. He said Graham Hilton, who lives at the address, was not in at the time of the blaze.

The court heard that he fire started in Mr Hilton's bedroom and spread throughout the first floor of the house, located to west of Ipswich town centre. It did not spread to the neighbouring properties.

In Saturday's edition of The Evening Star it was reported that three people from Surrey Road entered the house as they feared somebody was trapped inside.

Other neighbours described how they saw glass exploding from window frames due to the intensity of the blaze, which started at about 7pm.

One man, who did not want to be named said, he entered the house after calling the fire brigade.

He said: "We tried to get upstairs to the bedroom, where the fire was.

"It was just black with the smoke, so we tried to go along the side but we did not have a torch.

"Then water started pouring down the stairs so we got out."
