A MAN shouted obscenities at magistrates after his girlfriend was sentenced to a month behind bars.

Ipswich mother Hayley Page burst into tears when she was handed a prison sentence for taking to the roads when banned.

The 26-year-old was sentenced to a month in custody after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified and a host of other motoring offences.

Her partner, whose name was not said, verbally attacked chairman of the bench Dave Brennan as the sentence was passed, before leaving the public gallery in tears.

Page, who has a four-year-old daughter, was spotted driving a Honda Accord by police in Felixstowe Road on Sunday >.

She was previously banned for six months in March for driving without a licence.

The court heard that Page, of Lindbergh Road, incorrectly assumed the ban had expired.

At a hearing at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court she admitted driving when banned and also driving with no insurance or test certificate.

Roger Stewart, in mitigation, described the defendant as "not very worldly wise."

He said: "She was under the impression that the disqualification had expired."

He added that her partner had also been banned from driving, 18-months ago and had encouraged Page to drive him around despite the fact that she had not passed her test.

The court heard that Page wrongly believed she was legally entitled to drive a car if her partner was in the passenger seat.

Mr Brennan, said: "It's our opinion that this is a particularly serious type of driving while disqualified."

He added that a custodial sentence was "inevitable."

Page was also banned from driving for a further year and had her driving licence endorsed.
