A POSTMISTRESS has hit out at motorists she claims are flouting the county council's new 30mph speed limit on the A140 through her village.

Little Stonham postmistress Lyn Buttle and her husband Colin said yesterday more should be done to implement the recently-introduced limits on the Suffolk stretch of the road.

They were introduced earlier this year, with Suffolk County Council hoping they would reduce crashes on the road which has claimed more than 80 lives in 20 years.

Some motorists say they have become increasingly frustrated by 50mph restriction on the open stretches of the road.

But yesterday Mrs Buttle, 53, who runs the post office and stores in Little Stonham, said people also appeared to be breaking the lower 30mph restriction in their village.

She said: "I'm so angry, motorists are blatantly flouting the speed limit.

"We have lived here seven years and the limit has dropped from 50mph to 30mph. I appreciate you can't force people to do certain speeds, but if it is a 30mph zone, people should do 30mph. I walk my granddaughter alongside the road and when wagons go past it's hard to hold the buggy down.''

Her husband Colin, also 53, said: "They have got to find some way of implementing the new limit, if they are not implementing it, they might as well do away with it.''

Some drivers believe the speed restrictions are causing unnecessary frustration and delays and that on the 16-mile journey from where the A140 joins the A14 to Diss, there are ten changes to the speed limit, ranging from 30mph, 40mph and 50mph.

But Suffolk SafeCam, the organisation responsible for fixed and mobile speed cameras in the county, plan to have more mobile units out on the A140 in future weeks and months.

The organisation believes it has allowed a good amount of time for road users to get used to the lower speed limits.

Michelle Finnerty, spokeswoman for Suffolk SafeCam, said: "Drivers need to be more responsible, 97% of accidents are through driver error.

"People should stick to the speed limits for everyone's safety, it only adds minutes to your journey and its better late than never.''

Peter Monk, Suffolk County Council's portfolio holder for public protection, said: "We have introduced the 50mph speed limits on the A140 to make the roads safer and if someone has concerns over the speed limits being enforced we can discuss this with the police and safety camera partnership.

"There is clear evidence that lower, sensible speed limits can help to cut accidents and save lives.

"We are doing all we can to make the county's roads safer but drivers need to do their bit by taking care whilst driving and sticking to the speed limit. We are closely monitoring the effectiveness of the new speed limits along the A140 and will assess their impact after a year.''
