Developers are hoping to build another 44 flats on land in Duke Street, near Ipswich’s Waterfront.

Brocklehurst Architects are working with landowners on a project to build the new homes between Tye Road and Unity Street.

They have been talking to planning officials at Ipswich Council to try to draw up a proposal that is likely to get the go-ahead from borough planners.

Katherine Seagrief from Brocklehurst Architects, which is based in Buckinghamshire, said it was important that local residents could see and comment on the plans before they were considered by the authority.

They are holding a public exhibition in early June to show off the proposals and get reaction from local residents.

Ms Seagrief said: “It is not a huge development, but it is important that local residents know what is proposed and can have their say on the development.”

There would be a mixture of one and two-bedroomed flats in the development with a four-storey building facing on to Duke Street.

Over the last 15 years the area around Duke Street has seen considerable development with new flats and townhouses – and new student accommodation and the Travelodge Hotel.

The planning application is set to be lodged with the borough council later in the summer and is expected to be discussed by its planning and development committee later in the year.

The exhibition will be held at Home from Home Estate Agents in Pownell Road on Thursday, Friday and Saturday – June 1-3. The exhibition will be open from 9am-5.30pm on Thursday and Friday and from 9.30am-12.30pm on Saturday.

As well as seeing what is proposed, visitors to the exhibition will also be able to make comments.

The development will include parking spaces which will be accessed from Unity Street – the plans show a total of 38 new parking spaces for the 44 flats.

There has been concern about increasing traffic in the Duke Street/Fore Hamlet area of the town – but some of the new homes built in that area are occupied by people who do not have access to cars because they are within easy walking or cycling distance of the Waterfront, town centre and railway station.
