SUFFOLK was today bracing itself for another day of snow chaos - after shivering through a night of sub-zero temperatures.

Gritters were out on the main roads last night and again early this morning, but driving conditions off the priority routes were treacherous and commuters in outlying areas faced a slow and dangerous journey to reach the A12 and A14.

Country roads, and sideroads and junctions in towns were compacted ice and drivers described conditions as “like a skating rink”.

A county council spokeswoman said: “There will be some very icy conditions on untreated roads.

“We are expecting further snow showers today, tomorrow and Saturday and the outlook for Sunday is unclear.

“Temperatures are expected to stay near or below freezing throughout the period and the current cold spell looks set to continue well into next week.”

Pavements were also frozen after temperatures plummeted overnight to minus 6C in parts of the county.

There was little fresh snowfall but a sharp frost, though forecasters said more snow was expected today.

There would be scattered showers, but some places could see up to five centimetres, with north-easterly winds. Temperatures would only reach 1C and tonight drop to minus 4C.

Many schools were expected to return to normal today but headteachers were assessing the situation.

The problem for many is not children being able to get to school but travel for staff, many of whom often live away from where they work.
