COCAINE smuggler William Nimmo has been jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to smuggling nearly £250,000 worth of drugs into the region.

Nimmo, 33, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday after Harwich customs discovered 16 packages of cocaine in the lining of his suitcase with a street value of almost £250,000.

Nimmo, from Thornwood Drive, Glasgow, was travelling on a Harwich foot-ferry from the Hook of Holland on April 3 when the haul was discovered.

Customs spokesman John Barber, said: "This is the fourth person in ten days to be given a substantial sentence for smuggling Class A drugs through Harwich. In all they have been given 34 years imprisonment between them. This should be sending out a message to those tempted to get involved."
