HUNDREDS of pounds have already been donated by our loyal readers in support of the Evening Star's Save a Life Appeal.

Readers have been pledging money in their droves to help the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service buy state of the art communications equipment.

The group of volunteer doctors who turn out night and day in all conditions to help save the lives of people involved in horrific accidents have been chosen to benefit from this year's Evening Star Christmas Appeal.

Our target is to raise £20,000 to buy special satellite navigation equipment, tracking systems, radios, pagers and mobile phones for the 56 doctors who operate in the county.

This will ensure that the doctors can be reached by ambulance control staff at any time, wherever they are, to make sure the person closest to the scene can be there in the quickest time possible.

They can then give the medication needed at the scene as well as being able to inform ambulance crews if more people are required and tell the hospital exactly what to expect when the casualties get there.

As well as our readers, businesses across the county have been offering their support ensuring that we are well on our way to reaching our target.

The Ipswich and Norwich Co-operative Society has set up a special share number for its customers to quote when they buy their goods.

Just by quoting 977 to the cashier means vital money is going straight to the SARS appeal to help in the crusade.

We all hope we will never have to use them, but thousands of lives in the county have been saved because of SARS and their work with the emergency services.

n. To let us know of fundraising events going ahead to raise money for the SARS appeal contact the Evening Star newsdesk on 01473 282292 or email StarNews@eveningstar.co.uk.

Donations should be sent to Geraldine Thompson, Editors Secretary, Evening Star, 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich IP4 1AN.
