Fire station in Princes Street, lpswich

One of two full-time appliances based at Princes Street in the town has left the station as part of the shake up of Suffolk’s fire services approved earlier this year.

Princes Street is now home to one full-time fire engine and one appliance crewed by on-call firefighters.

Over the next few weeks on-call fire appliances are also due to be removed from Ipswich East, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft South fire stations as part of the changes that are aimed at saving about £1m from the fire service budget.

No firefighters are facing redundancy as a result of the changes – but some are being redeployed. Full-time firefighters will be sent to towns to boost numbers to ensure on-call fire appliances remain available for more hours of the day.
