The potentially toxic blue-green algae outbreak at Alton Water is still preventing boaters and swimmers from using the water nearly three weeks after it first closed the lake.
Water quality levels are being checked daily but it is still unsafe to swim in the lake and animal owners are being advised not to let their pets drink the water.
Today it has been announced that Aqua Park Suffolk, which was shut down at the start of the outbreak, could reopen on Monday
Richard Drinkwater, co-owner of Aqua Park Suffolk, said: “We would like to thank all visitors for their patience whilst we have been dealing with the unprecedented blue green algae levels at Alton Water.
“We are very disappointed that Anglian Water has required our park to be temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, but we are doing everything we can to deal with factors beyond our control including investing in specially designed equipment to improve the water quality.
“We are committed to restarting operations as soon as Anglian Water allow us to get back on the water.
“The water quality levels are being monitored daily by Anglian Water as well as looking at weather conditions to help us determine when we can open.”
He continued: “Whilst quality levels have improved, safety is priority so we can not operate until Anglian Water are confident the water quality exceeds the highest standards.
“For the present we can confirm that we will be closed until and including Sunday, August 12.”
However, the reopening relies on the success of pioneering algae-busting machinary.
Mr Drinkwater said: “We appreciate that our temporary closure is frustrating for all visitors who are trying to make social arrangements and we can only apologise for any inconvenience this exceptional situation has caused.
“We were very excited to launch Aqua Park Suffolk and hope we can welcome you back very soon, in the meantime thank you so much for your patience and support.”
He reassured those with existing bookings that they would be entitled to a full refund if the park was unable to open.
A spokesman for Anglian Water said: “Aqua Park and Anglian Water continue to work closely together to trial various technologies, including ultrasound, to try and reduce the algae numbers.
“However, this is new technology for such a large body of water.
“Whilst the water remains closed all other Alton Water park activities are open to visitors as normal, including cycling, walking, camping and the tea rooms.”
We previously stated the park was shut until August 16 but is currently scheduled to open on August 13.
