A MAN is still being questioned by Suffolk Police following a terrifying jewellery shop raid during which a shop owner was slashed in the throat with a knife.

The female proprietor of the Gold and Silver Studio, in Bury St Edmunds' Hatter Street, was taken to the West Suffolk Hospital in the town following the incident on Wednesday night. She needed three stitches to the knife wound on her neck, before she was later released.

The robbery happened shortly before 5pm when a man walked into the jewellery shop and attacked the woman, who was working behind the counter, with the knife.

He then snatched a diamond ring before running off through the town centre. The male co-owner of the shop and a number of other people chased him, and he was eventually detained by two off-duty police officers shopping in the town.

A 45-year-old Sussex man was arrested in connection with the incident, and was sill being questioned by detectives at Bury Police Station last night.

The Gold and Silver Studio was closed throughout yesterday.
