A SUSPECTED armed robber has been arrested in Essex after cash was stolen from a security guard at a Stowmarket supermarket.

The raid happened at Tesco in Cedars Park, Stowmarket, at around 1pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said the security guard, who worked for Group 4 Securicor, was leaving the store with a cash box when he was approached by the armed robber.

The spokeswoman said: “The security guard was threatened with what appears to be a stake or wooden implement and the cash box was taken.”

The security guard was left with minor injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance crews.

A man was arrested at around 2.25pm after Suffolk police worked with officers in Essex to track the getaway vehicle.

The spokeswoman said: “The vehicle was pursued to Essex where a man was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

“He was brought back to Ipswich for questioning.”

Suffolk police have stressed that they did not chase the suspect vehicle, claiming it was “more of a following”.

Essex police has refused to comment on the incident.

It is believed that the cash box has not been retrieved and it is not clear how much money it contained.

Suffolk police, who were alerted to the situation following a call from a member of staff at Tesco, are appealing for witnesses to the robbery.

The arrested man, a 40-year-old, is continuing to be questioned today at Bury St Edmunds police station.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DI Martin Wright at Bury St Edmunds CID on 01473 613500.
