FIRE chiefs today warned residents to be vigilant following a spate of suspected arson attacks on cars in Hadleigh.

Four vehicles, one valued at £4,500, and part of a garage roof went up in flames within two hours at three locations around the town.

Assistant Divisional Officer Karl Rolfe who attended one of the blazes at around 11.45pm on Sunday night said that fire chiefs were taking a very serious view of the incidents and would be working closely with the police to prevent any reoccurrence.

An N-Reg Vauxhall Astra valued at £4,500 was destroyed along Bradfield Crescent just before 1am and 40 minutes earlier crews were called to Pykenham Way to another car fire.

"We can't rule out the possibility that they are linked. Car fires are not a rarity but it is clearly suspicious to have that many car fires that close together in that time period," he said.

"We couldn't find any accidental causes for the fires, which does concern us."

Mr Rolfe, who attended the incident in Weavers Close in which two parked vehicles and the roof of a timber and board carport were severely damaged, urged car owners to ensure vehicles are securely locked when left unattended and parked in well lit areas.

"People need to be vigilant. If they see any suspicious activity around cars or garages they should relay that straight to the police."

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said that there was "nothing evidential" to link the three blazes but officers were looking at them "as an overall picture" because of the close proximity of the times and locations of the incidents.
