A steam cloud built up over the Sizewell B power station in the early hours of yesterday morning after a faulty valve triggered the reactor's trip switch.

A steam cloud built up over the Sizewell B power station in the early hours of yesterday morning after a faulty valve triggered the reactor's trip switch.

But British Energy, which owns the nuclear station, said there was no danger to the public from the steam and added it was the result of an operational procedure.

A spokesman said: "A faulty valve caused the reactor to trip and the steam had to be released, forming a cloud above the station

"But it was pure steam – there were no safety implications and the reactor shut down safely. It was a simple operational procedure, but unfortunately it makes quite a lot of noise."
