BABERGH Council has given its backing to a new business centre for Hadleigh, which will provide support for local businesses in the town.

The centre, which will be funded jointly with Suffolk County Council, will be a 'managed workplace' on the model of the successful South Suffolk Business Park in Sudbury.

The Hadleigh Business Centre will provide opportunities for local companies to rent office space and made use of facilities such as administration and reception support as well as the extra provision for a 3000 sq ft pre-school childcare nursery.

Discussions are being held with the Ipswich & Sudbury Enterprise Centre to run the Hadleigh unit.

Babergh will be contributing £45k towards the construction of the centre. According to David Hodge, Chairman of the Economic and Rural Development Task Group, this is an essential investment that will benefit the local economy.

Commenting on the committee's support for this funding, Mr Hodge, said:

"Business centres, by providing collective administrative support, are the ideal base for small businesses. It is also particularly gratifying that we will be able to link pre-school facilities to this development which will be a very real boost to Hadleigh's industrial infrastructure."

Malcolm Perrins, Babergh's Economic Development Officer, agreed with this assessment, adding: "Small businesses need support when it comes to reception, switchboard and other administrative services. Equally, it is important for these companies to retain good staff, especially those trying to bring up small children.

"I believe that the Hadleigh Business Centre will make a positive contribution to helping local businesses in both of these ways."
