FELIXSTOWE parents are today maintaining a bedside vigil after their son was injured in a school-gate motorcycle smash.

Schoolchildren watched in horror as a motorcycle collided with a pupil outside Deben High School.

Martin Cumberland, who is in his early teens, was left with serious injuries. He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where his parents, Julie and Paul, are waiting anxiously by his bedside.

A spokesman for the hospital, which specialises in head injuries, described his condition as stable.

Martin was returning to school after going home at lunchtime on Tuesday when he was was in collision with the motorbike on Garrison Lane at around 1.15pm.

The road has long been the target of a campaign for a zebra crossing outside the school gates.

Town councillor Barry Gillings said: "I have been campaigning for a zebra crossing on this part of Garrison Lane for years but have constantly been told it is not busy enough. Yet this is one of the busiest roads in Felixstowe – and is getting worse.

"The children come out of school at lunchtimes and the end of the day and they spill across the road to go into town and most of them are not really looking out for traffic and don't see the cars. I have been expecting an accident for a long time and there are bound to be others in the future.

"Too many children are taken everywhere by car from such an early age that they don't seem to have any road sense or know how to cross a road properly."
