MEET Poppy the beer-drinking cat.

The adorable moggy is the namesake of Tolly Cobbold's Poppy Pride ale and loves to have a tipple.

Three-year-old Poppy acquired the taste four months ago when she jumped on to the lap of her owner, Ipswich man Martin Baldry, 45, who was having a swig at the time.

She sniffed at the bottle and tried to have sip.

Martin's wife, Angela, 34, said: "Poppy only has beer on occasions, not very often. Probably only about once a month.

"But she absolutely loves it and licks it off your fingers. She won't drink it out of saucer, she'll only drink it this way.

"She has very strange tastes for a cat because she also likes peppers, onions and likes pear juice."

She got into a scrape two year ago when she was hit by a car outside the couple's old address in Cauldwell Hall Road. She was rushed to the vets where it was thought she would have to have her injured left leg removed. It was touch and go whether she would survive but Poppy recovered but she still walks with a limp.

"It was touch and go whether she would survive," said Mrs Baldry, who took Poppy to faith healer, Richard Brown, in Burstall. "She looked so sorry for herself.

"Then suddenly one day the brightness came back into her eyes and she was back to her old self again. The only time I have seen her wobble was when she was under anaesthetic."

Tolly Cobbold brewer, Nigel Bantoft, said: "Obviously Poppy has got impeccable taste and has found a tipple to stimulate her taste. It is another excellent Tolly Cobbold beer and it's a charity beer too."

Bottles of 50cl of Poppy Pride retail in a supermarket chain for £1.49 each and Tolly Cobbold donate 8.5p per bottle to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Tolly Cobbold and the Star have teamed up to give readers an excellent Christmas offer with the chance to help the charity.
