Three generations of police motorcyclists came together for a special Father’s Day surprise in Suffolk today which saw dozens ride out under the Orwell Bridge.

Father and son Mark and Aidan Lusher, who live in Rushmere St Andrew, led the convoy of 26 former colleagues and family members in the sunshine on Sunday morning.

They took the scenic route to present the eldest Lusher in the family, Geoff, with a 50-year-old Triumph motorcycle.

The former policeman - who turns 82 tomorrow - used to ride the iconic bike during his time at Suffolk Constabulary.

He retired in 1987 after spending almost 30 years as a police motorcyclist.

The group of bikers made their way along the B1456 from the Freston Boot car park towards Geoff’s home in Harkstead at around 10.45am on Sunday.

Mark, also a retired police officer, said: “The idea came about when one of our friends told us about an old Triumph they had seen at a show.

“It was the one dad used to ride so I got in contact with the owner after asking about it on a Facebook group which is for ex Suffolk Constabulary employees.

“We thought it would be a nice idea to ride out for him and present it to him as a joint Father’s Day and birthday surprise. When we got there he said ‘cor blimey’ and was really surprised, so it was the perfect reaction really.

The 53-year-old added: “My boy Aidan, who is 20 had a go on it so it was a bit of a past and present moment him riding the bike that my dad rode 50 years ago.

“My boy is now working for the police too and he was given my old bike for his 20th birthday.”

Mark’s mother provided snacks and water for the group, who had been wearing full motorcycle gear in 32C heat.

She was also in on the secret and brought Geoff out to see his former colleagues – some of whom he had not seen for more than 30 years.

Mark, who joined the force in 1982 and retired in 2012, said: “Dad left the force in 1987 so he hadn’t seen some of the people we invited along for nearly three decades.

“It was brilliant to see him talking to them and catching up on the old days.

“I’d like to thank the current owner of the bike for letting us use and coming along, and also everyone who came because I think it made Dad’s day.”
