A BINGO worker has spoken of his terror when a gang attacked him and stole his wallet and mobile phone.

Paul Deere, was on his way home from a shift at Mecca bingo, in Ipswich, when a gang of five men approached him on Kenyon Street.

Mr Deere, 32, of Webb Street, Ipswich, said: "They came up to me and one of them asked me if I had any stuff. I didn't know what stuff they meant so I told them I didn't have any.

"I tried to walk past them and one of them who was wearing a big gold coat with a furry hood punched me in the eye. At that point I tried to run off."

The group chased Mr Deere towards his house where another man in the group asked him if he was ok.

"I replied 'what do you think' and then he punched me in the same eye." Mr Deere added.

A driver in a passing car stopped to help Mr Deere and when the group ran off he thought the attack was over.

However, the incident, which happened at 10.50pm on April 18, was not over and when the passer by went to find a phone to contact the police the group came back and carried on attacking Mr Deere.

He said: "They kicked me to the ground and carried on kicking me in the stomach and side. One of them suggested they should take my wallet so they did."

When the man who took his wallet ran off, Mr Deere attempted to run after him but another man tripped him up.

He said: "That's when my mobile phone fell out of my pocket and they took that too."

Mr Deere spent the night at his sister's house.

He said: "I was too scared to go home. All I could think of was how lucky I was that the driver stopped. If nobody had stopped to call the police I could have been there for hours. I really want to thank him, I don't know what would have happened if he wasn't there.

"The whole incident has really scared me and I am too frightened to walk home from work now. I always catch the bus."

One member of the group is described as of Asian appearance, 18 years old, around 5'8' tall and of medium build.

Another member of the group is described as black, 18 years old of stocky build and around 5'10' tall.

He had short black hair and wore a black jacket and black jumper.
