IPSWICH man Mark Barton must return to court for sentencing after pleading guilty to punching a night clubber in an unprovoked attack.

Barton admitted assaulting a reveller at Liquid night club in Ipswich on the night the victim was celebrating his birthday.

Speaking at South East Magistrates Court in Ipswich prosecutor Ian Pells said the victim was on the dance floor when he asked an unknown woman to take a group picture.

He then became aware of Barton's presence who punched him on the forehead, knocking him to the ground. "There was blood on his [the victim's] face and clothing," said Pells.

The victim was taken to the first aid room where he received treatment for his injuries, which included a cut in the middle of his forehead and bruising to his right cheek.

Stephen Colman, mitigating, said Barton, of Ainslie Road, found himself in unfamiliar circumstances at Liquid nightclub.

"He found it [Liquid] a place full of binge drinkers which he wasn't used to and got caught up in the atmosphere of it," said Colman.

The 25-year-old was on the dance floor when he became aware of someone near him and felt a tense atmosphere. For some unknown reason he punched the other man. "In all honesty he couldn't explain why he did what he did," said Colman.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report with all options open except custody. Barton is due to return to South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court on March 4.
