Some of the county's newest official adults were presented with cards in

Local Democracy Week, a national campaign which aimed to promote democracy and encourage community involvement in local government.

Members of Ipswich Town's youth squad joined the group to celebrate, along with Chris Mole, leader of Suffolk County Council.

Mr Mole said: "It is vital that young people feel part of their community and that their opinions are heard by the county council. An important way in which this can happen is by voting and taking full advantage of the services available to them.

"The 18th birthday card initiative is one way in which we hope this message will reach our young people."

The card entitles the holder to a free loan from the sound and vision section of their local library.

Sixth formers from Copleston High School also invited county councillors for a community involvement meeting during the week.

Head of sixth form Helen Neal said: "Pupils should contribute to the community. It is crucial that they feel their opinions can really make a difference.

"This is a great chance for young people's thoughts and views to be included in decisions that can affect them."

County Hall in Ipswich also opened its doors to the public for a guided tour of the main building, St Helen Court, and view the paintings and artwork on display.
