The small blaze is thought to have broken out in a chip fryer at McDonald's restaurant with the flames spreading to a roof duct.

Around 35 firefighters attended the scene at the Thurrock shopping centre, taking almost an hour to extinguish the fire. No-one was hurt in the incident.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at around 10.25am. Firefighters from nearby Grays, Orsett and Basildon were sent to the scene and the blaze was under control by 11.10am.

A spokesman for the centre said: "Our on-site security teams, working with the local fire services, evacuated part of the centre immediately and the fire services worked to extinguish the fire.

"We are working with the emergency services to investigate the cause of the fire and are unable to provide any more information at this time."
