A FAMILY thanked the fire service today after their quick action to deal with a bedroom blaze saved their home from severe damage.

Three fire crews were called to the two-storey mid-terrace property in Elizabeth Way, Felixstowe, after fire broke out upstairs.

A man and two young children - a baby and a six year old - in the house were alerted by a smoke alarm going off and quickly left the building and called the emergency services.

A man at the property today, who did not want to be named, said: “Thank goodness for smoke alarms - the children were in bed and I was downstairs watching TV but as soon as I heard that I just grabbed the kids and we got out as fast as we could.

“The fire service were here pretty quickly and they were absolutely brilliant and we just want to thank them for all their help.

“The whole of the upstairs is a real mess. It is really upsetting because we had just got all new bedroom furniture.”

Firefighters from Felixstowe and Ipswich attended with the first crew on the scene by 8.30pm.

They had extinguished the fire and made sure the house, which had suffered considerable smoke damage, was safe by 8.53pm.
